You can monitor message processing and connections for Windows Server 2008 SMTP Server. The following table describes some of the performance counters.

Counter Normal readings Description

Local Queue Length

0

This counter monitors the number of messages in the local queue. If the number is greater than 0, the server is receiving more messages than it can process. If the number steadily increases, determine what is causing the delay in processing.

Remote Queue Length

0

This counter monitors the number of messages in the remote queue. If the number is greater than 0, the server is receiving more messages than it can process. If the number steadily increases, determine what is causing the delay in processing.

Inbound Connections Current

Greater than 0

This counter monitors the current number of inbound connections. A value of 0 for an extended time can indicate network problems.
