Server for NIS enables a Microsoft Windows–based Active Directory Domain Services (AD DS) domain controller to administer UNIX Network Information Service (NIS) networks. Server for NIS allows you to migrate existing NIS maps from your UNIX-based NIS servers into the AD DS schema, and manage map data by using either command-line or Windows GUI-based tools.
Notes
Server for NIS can only be installed on an AD DS domain controller.

Set how often maps are propagated to subordinate (also known as slave) NIS servers. |
Review and, if needed, add or remove UNIX subordinate servers in the domain. |
As needed, install Server for NIS on other domain controllers, which are automatically configured as subordinate servers. |
Install Password Synchronization on all other domain controllers. This ensures that when a user's password is changed, the password is updated across the domain. Server for NIS receives the updated passwords when the data is replicated to the domain controller. |
