You can dynamically increase the size of an iSCSI virtual disk without losing data and without restarting the iSCSI target. In Microsoft iSCSI Software Target, you can use the Extend Virtual Disk Wizard to extend the virtual disk.

Note
The size displayed in the Microsoft iSCSI Software Target console may not be dynamically updated after you resize the virtual disk. Refresh the view in the console to display the new size.

The initial size of an iSCSI virtual disk is determined when the virtual disk is created. For more information about how the size of a virtual disk is initially specified, see Creating a Virtual Disk for an iSCSI Target.

Membership in the local Administrators group, or equivalent, is the minimum required to complete this procedure. Review the details in "Additional considerations" in this topic.

To extend a virtual disk
  1. In Microsoft iSCSI Software Target, in the console tree, click Devices.

  2. In the results pane, right-click the virtual disk you want to extend, and then click Extend Virtual Disk.

  3. Follow the steps in the Extend Virtual Disk Wizard.

Additional considerations

  • You must be a member of the local Administrators group to perform these tasks.

  • To open iSCSI Software Target, click Start, point to Administrative Tools, and then click Microsoft iSCSI Software Target.

  • Another way to open iSCSI Software Target is to click Start, click Run, and then type iscsitarget.msc.
