After a connection has been opened and the receiving server has acknowledged that it is ready to receive data, messages can be transmitted for delivery. Use the Delivery tab of the SMTP virtual server Properties page to set all delivery and routing options. This includes setting retry intervals for delivering messages, limiting the number of hops to servers during delivery, and identifying a masquerade domain name to display in the From line instead of the sender's original domain name.
The following options are available on the Delivery tab.
- Outbound
-
Use the Outbound settings to configure how the SMTP virtual server handles delayed mail. The following settings are available:
- First retry interval (minutes) This
setting determines how long the SMTP virtual server waits before it
tries to resend a message when the first delivery attempt is
unsuccessful. The default value for this setting is
15 minutes.
- Second retry interval (minutes) This
setting determines how long the SMTP virtual server waits before it
tries to resend a message after the first retry is unsuccessful.
The default value for this setting is 30 minutes.
- Third retry interval (minutes) This
setting determines how long the SMTP virtual server waits before it
tries to resend a message after the second retry is unsuccessful.
The default value for this setting is 60 minutes.
- Subsequent retry interval
(minutes) This setting determines how long the
SMTP virtual server waits between attempts to resend a message
after the third retry is unsuccessful. Delivery attempts continue
until the expiration time out is reached. The default value for
this setting is 240 minutes.
- Delay notification This setting
determines how long the SMTP virtual server waits after the
original mail delivery attempt before it notifies the sender of the
message that delivery is delayed. The default value of this setting
is 12 hours.
- Expiration timeout This setting
determines how long the SMTP virtual server continues to try to
deliver a message before it expires the message and sends a
non-delivery report (NDR) to the sender of the message.
- First retry interval (minutes) This
setting determines how long the SMTP virtual server waits before it
tries to resend a message when the first delivery attempt is
unsuccessful. The default value for this setting is
15 minutes.
- Local
-
Use the Local settings to configure the delay notification and expiration time out for local mail delivery. The following options are available:
- Delay notification This setting
determines how long the SMTP virtual server waits after the
original mail delivery attempt before it notifies the sender of the
message that delivery is delayed. The default value of this setting
is 12 hours. The minimum value is 1 minute and the
maximum value is 9999 days. Use the drop-down menus to set the
value to minutes, hours, or days.
- Expiration timeout This setting
determines how long the SMTP virtual server continues to try to
deliver a message before it expires the message and sends an NDR to
the sender of the message. The default value of this setting is
2 days. The minimum value is 1 minute and the maximum
value is 9999 days. Use the drop-down menus to set the value
to minutes, hours, or days.

original mail delivery attempt before it notifies the sender of the
message that delivery is delayed. The default value of this setting

- Outbound Security
-
Click Outbound Security to access the Outbound Security dialog box and configure the authentication method and credentials that are used by the SMTP virtual server to authenticate to a receiving server. You can also require that sessions are encrypted by using Transport Layer Security (TLS). These options can be set for all outgoing messages on the Outbound Security dialog box, and overridden for a specific remote domain on the Domain Properties tab. This lets you set the SMTP virtual server authentication and encryption level to handle most of the transmissions, while you allow exceptions for individual addresses.
- Outbound Connections
-
Click Outbound Connections to configure the SMTP virtual server to limit the number of concurrent outbound connections.
- Advanced
-
Click Advanced to configure the advanced delivery options, including the maximum hop count, masquerade domain, fully qualified domain name (FQDN), and smart host identity.
