When you need more storage space in a given partition, you can gain it by extending the partition into adjacent unallocated space on the same disk—without having to repartition the disk. You can extend partitions either from the Disk Management snap-in or from a command prompt using the DiskPart command.
There are certain restrictions on the types of partitions that can be extended in this way. The restrictions and steps for extending a partition are slightly different for basic volumes and for simple or spanned volumes.
For more information about extending a basic volume, see Extend a Basic Volume.
For more information about extending a simple or spanned volume, see Extend a Simple or Spanned Volume.
