You can use the Active Directory Domain Services Installation Wizard to install and configure Active Directory Domain Services (AD DS) on a server. When you install AD DS on a server, that server becomes a domain controller.

When you click a link to open a Help topic for the wizard, the Help topic remains on top of the wizard page. You can resize and reposition the Help topic to continue working in the wizard. |
The Active Directory Domain Services Installation Wizard provides a user interface (UI) for gathering information about your computing environment. It also checks prerequisites for installing AD DS, such as available disk space and the version of the operating system, to ensure that the server is capable of becoming a domain controller. If all the prerequisites are met, the wizard uses the information that it gathers to configure AD DS.
You can also use the wizard to remove AD DS from a domain controller. In this case, the wizard detects that AD DS is already installed on the server and it prompts you for information that is needed to uninstall AD DS.
